About the job
At Reefy, we are building nature-based solutions that restore marine ecosystems and protect coastal communities. As a Coastal Engineer, you’ll be part of the technical heart of our mission, supporting the development, testing, and implementation of our ReefBlock systems and other eco-engineering solutions.
This role is perfect for someone who is technically curious, eager to learn, and excited to apply their coastal engineering skills in a dynamic startup. You’ll support both R&D and project implementation, helping Reefy move fast without compromising on impact or quality.
We are looking for to grow with the team with different combinations of levels of expertise. From:
- Someone with at least 3 years of experience in the breakwater market that is confident on being responsible of shaping breakwater projects and defending choices with other senior engineers, fulfilling the description on this vacancy;
- To a senior and experienced expert in the field that is interested to join an impact driven company part-time and support a junior fast growing engineer that just finished studies.
So don't be shy and apply independently of the years of experience as there are multiple options!
Here are some of your core responsibilities:
You’ll work closely with the team to:
- Responsible of R&D an Subsidy projects that focus on innovation and market solutions;
- Assist in the design and development of coastal engineering solutions, such as breakwaters and artificial reefs;
- Support R&D activities, including field testing, wave tank experiments, modeling, and technical documentation;
- Perform preliminary and detailed designs of coastal structures using an eco-engineering approach, this includes drafting configurations of breakwaters and estimating its stability and hydraulic performance;
- Contribute to client projects by preparing calculations, technical drawings, reports, and proposals;
- Help translate client requirements into practical, buildable, and eco-effective solutions;
- Improve and maintain our technical tools, design manuals, and calculation models;
- Be hands-on in solving challenges during pilot deployments and scaling of ReefBlocks.
About you
You’re not just a great engineer, you’re a pragmatic thinker, a creative problem-solver, and an entrepreneurial team player. You know how to navigate the grey zones of innovation, and you thrive when things aren’t perfectly defined (yet).

- Proven technical knowledge for the design and implementation of coastal structures (submerged breakwaters, groynes, offshore scour protection). Candidate needs to be able to interpret and calculate technical data like bathymetric studies, stability number, wave transmission, wave reflection, among others to design and determine if proposed structures have an adequate hydraulic performance for the project.
- Great written and communication skills to work independently in deliverables;
- Strategic, but also hands-on — you don’t mind creating a quick model or reviewing a calculation;
- Proficient in Dutch and English. Spanish language reading/writing is a plus;
