16 Handy apps to help you live more sustainably

Would you like to live more sustainably but don’t know where to start? Greenjobs.nl has a list of 13 handy apps that can help you and useful apps from sustainable shopping to sustainable Search Engines, that can help you live more consciously via your phone. To help you along, sustainable job board Greenjobs.nl listed 16 sustainable apps that will make even your phone-use a little greener! The range of apps are diverse, so there’s something for everyone. 


16 Handy apps to help you live more sustainable

1. 🌿 Ecosia

Did you know that on average we perform 3.5 billion searches via a search engine in one day? What if we could use that differently? B Corp Ecosia is a search engine but a green variety of Google. The tool works the same but by choosing to use Ecosia you contribute to a better world because part of the advertising revenue is used for planting trees! This ecologically friendly app is a good alternative to plant trees with your searches. On top of this, their servers run on 100% renewable energy and the advertising revenues are used to plant trees where they are needed most. Ecosia is also featured in our blog about ‘How to work sustainably from home’! And just like Greenjobs.nl, Ecosia is also a Certified B Organisation!

2. 🌿 Keurmerkenwijzer

There are tons of quality marks around, but as was exposed in the Netflix special ‘Seaspiracy’ not all are as sustainable as advertised. With the help this certification/quality label indicator app you can always make the most sustainable choice! The app provides you with information about what the quality marks are concerned with and to what extent the quality marks pay attention to the environment, animal welfare and social aspects.

3. 🌿Too Good To Go

This app helps local restaurants and fights food waste. The concept is that local restaurants put together a so-called ‘food box’ at the end of the working day with leftover products that most likely won’t be sold and would otherwise be thrown away. These boxes can then be purchased for a reasonable price. Too Good To Go is also a B Corp just like Greenjobs.nl! We love the app and save food every month by ordering through the app!

4. 🌿The Questionmark

This app shows the impact of supermarket products on the environment, your health and animal welfare. In the app you can scan the barcode of products and this allows you to see whether you can buy the product with confidence, or whether you would rather let it pass you by. This makes sustainable shopping easy for you! So curious if the groceries you buy at Jumbo, Lidl, AH, Aldi, Marqt, Ekoplaza and other supermarkets are sustainable, use this handy sustainable app!

5. 🌿 Beat the Microbead

Many products contain microplastics. Your shower gel, your toothpaste or your make-up. With the app Beat the Microbead you can find out whether the product you have or want to buy contains micro plastics. Take a picture of the ingredients and within a few seconds the app will indicate whether it is free of microplastics or not.

6. 🌿 Happy Cow

HappyCow is a handy sustainable app on which vegetarian and vegan restaurants can be found. What makes this app extra fun is that there is an entire community behind it: two million people have already downloaded the app. You can give recommendations and leave reviews on the app. So looking for a vegetarian restaurant near you? Download the sustainable app and happy eating-out!

7. 🌿 Think Dirty

Think Dirty is an app that mainly focuses on beauty products. Not sure if your make-up is sustainable and responsible? With this app you scan the product and you immediately see which ingredients it contains. Not only does Think Dirty indicate whether your product is wrong, they also immediately offer an alternative.

8. 🌿 Peerby

Why buy when you can borrow it? Peerby put this theory into practice with their app. This saves you money and makes an impact: win-win!! The Peerby app makes exchanging, borrowing and renting a lot easier. In the app you can see what your neighbors offer, offer products yourself and place requests. This makes it easy to exchange, rent or borrow instead of buying and so you reduce co2 emissions! Handy, easy and sustainable!

9. 🌿 Vinted and Marktplaats

Via Vinted you can buy or sell second-hand clothing and/or stuff! Because why new when you can also use it second-hand? And why keep clothes you no longer wear when you can make someone else happy with them? Shopping has never been so easy and sustainable! Another app is of course Marktplaats! Here you can find many more products for your garden, interior or sports. The difference between Vindted and Marktplaats is that you can also buy second-hand clothing across the border at Vinted, while Marktplaats only sells it in the Netherlands.

10. 🌿 Swip Swap

You can easily swap toys via the Swip Swap app. This means you don't have to buy toys again and again, but you can simply exchange them with others!

11. 🌿 Litterati

Litterati is an app to combat litter by registering and mapping it. In this sustainable app, all litter found is recorded by means of a photo, provided with coordinates and provided with registration labels. This information can then be used to arrive at targeted solutions against litter.

12.🌿 Plastic Avengers

Another app against litter! With tens of thousands of photos of plastic litter, this app visualizes plastic pollution. With all those photos they go to the producers and sellers of products that cause a lot of plastic litter and ask for solutions. In this way it is possible to tackle sources of plastic pollution. Each time they focus on a separate group of litter such as Mars wrappers, cans and children's fireworks with plastic residues and they enter into a conversation with the producers to ask for a solution for the litter caused!

13. 🌿 Fork Ranger - Climate Cooking

Another great app to help you cook more sustainably! This new recipe game to explore the taste of climate-friendly food! Go on a journey through the food system, with fun quizzes and easy recipes to put knowledge into practice. The app will help you cook easy recipes that are also climate friendly. 

14. 🌿 Joule bug

Joulebug helps you make everyday habits more sustainable. At home, at work, etc. Together with your friends you can start saving energy and money. Joulebug gives you tasks that help you live a little more sustainably every day.

15. 🌿 Supercook

Suppose you have some ingredients left in your fridge that you don't know what you can make with. The Supercook app helps you with that. You simply fill in the ingredients you have left and Supercook will come up with a recipe. This way you never have to throw food away again.

16. 🌿 Good on you

Good on you gives clothing brands a rating in how sustainable they are. So if you are unsure about a clothing brand or a piece of clothing that you want to purchase, look it up via Good on You and that way you will know when it is better to leave a piece of clothing or not.
