Departmental Summary
The Operations Department at B Lab Europe plays a vital role in enabling the organization to achieve its mission of supporting and growing the B Corp movement across Europe. This department is responsible for managing the internal systems, processes, and resources that ensure smooth day-to-day operations. Key functions include overseeing financial management, human resources, legal, IT, and office administration, as well as optimizing organizational efficiency through effective process design, innovation design, insights and resource allocation. The Operations Department also plays a critical role in supporting strategic initiatives, such as facilitating cross-functional collaboration, managing compliance with regulatory requirements, and ensuring alignment with global B Lab.
Overview
We are looking for a maternity leave cover for the Head of Operations who plays a vital role in leading and optimizing the organization's day-to-day operations. Reporting to the Executive Director of Europe, this role leads the Operations Department, encompassing:
- People & Culture
- Finance
- Legal
- Governance & Strategy
On top of managing these teams above, the Head of Operations is responsible for ensuring that internal systems, policies, and practices are effective, scalable, and aligned with B Lab Europe's mission. This is both a strategic and hands-on role, supporting internal teams and operations across the European Network. This role is also a member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) at B Lab Europe. It is a key leadership position in the European Network, guiding our organizational operations across multiple locations and legal environments.
Core Responsibilities
People & Culture
- Champion a people-first approach to operations, enhancing team cohesion, wellbeing, and performance across cultures.
- Oversee core HR operations including employment policies, recruitment, contract and compensation management, and professional development (in collaboration with the P&C Team).
- Ensure compliance with Dutch and EU employment laws in collaboration with the People & Culture Manager.
- Lead performance management, organizational design, and DEIB efforts to support team growth and effectiveness.
- Support the People & Culture Manager with sensitive internal matters, including mediation and resolution of complex interpersonal or performance issues.
- Act as the first point of contact for whistleblower reports, managing initial investigations and ensuring confidentiality and compliance.
- Help maintain a culture of psychological safety by overseeing fair and compassionate conflict resolution processes.
Organizational Management & Strategic Thinking
- Lead and manage the Operations Department, overseeing functional areas including People & Culture, Legal, Governance and Strategy, Finance, Innovation & Insights.
- Provide operational leadership across our multi-country presence, including offices and employees in Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Berlin, Milan, and employees in Belgium, Ireland, France and Spain.
- Foster a collaborative, inclusive, high-performance culture that reflects B Lab Europe's values.
Business Operations & Infrastructure
- Oversee day-to-day operations and long-term operational planning to ensure organizational resilience and cross-functional alignment.
- Design, document, and optimize internal workflows, identifying and addressing inefficiencies across departments.
- Manage internal systems and platforms (eg, Salesforce, Click Up, Miro, Slack, Google Workspace), including tool integration, maintenance, and training.
- Oversee office operations and infrastructure, including facilities, IT, onboarding logistics, and coordination of hybrid work.
- Strengthen internal communication and knowledge-sharing to support onboarding and organizational cohesion.
Finance, Legal & Governance
- Oversee financial planning, budgeting, and monitoring in close partnership with the Finance Team.
- Ensure legal and regulatory compliance across multiple jurisdictions, supported by governance frameworks and external legal advisors.
- Maintain strong internal controls and effective risk management practices.
Vendor, Partner & Network Operations
- Manage contracts and relationships with external vendors and service providers (eg, IT, office services, software).
- Ensure operational consistency and infrastructure alignment across country partners and regional offices.
- Coordinate cross-border operational initiatives and liaise with the global B Lab network on relevant operations matters.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
- Knowledge of HR operations and employment practices within the EU, including hybrid and remote working environments.
- Experience leading cross-functional teams and aligning operational practices with organizational priorities.
- Sound judgment and decision-making in dynamic, multi-stakeholder environments, with the ability to balance competing needs.
- Strong skills in systems design and process improvement, with a focus on operational efficiency and scalable workflows.
- Supportive and inclusive people leadership, with a demonstrated commitment to equity, wellbeing, and performance.
- Ability to work across both strategic planning and hands-on execution, managing day-to-day operations while contributing to long-term goals.
- Experience with mediation and change management is an asset, especially during times of organizational transition or growth.
- Familiarity with financial planning, budgeting, and performance monitoring, with the ability to collaborate with finance teams and track departmental spending.
- Understanding of governance, legal, and risk considerations across different European jurisdictions.
- Confidence in using and managing digital tools and systems, including CRMs, project management platforms, and internal communication tools.
- Comfortable using data and metrics to inform decision-making, monitor progress, and support internal reporting.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across cultures and collaborate with regional and global partners.
- Proactive, adaptable, and solutions-oriented, with a continuous improvement mindset and strong alignment to B Lab's mission and values.
Salary
- Salary for this role will be €75500 annually (€75500 - 89500 is the salary range for this position)
Working Arrangements
Hybrid – it is possible to work both from the office in Amsterdam and from home, however you will be required to be located in the Netherlands so you are available to come into the office each week and as needed.
