Background

Resilience is a fast-growing agribusiness consultancy company from the Netherlands, with offices in Bogota, Cotonou, Kampala, Kigali, Maputo/Chimoio, and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The company implements a large number of agricultural development project and provides training and coaching support to a large number of agribusiness SMEs in Africa. As Resilience we undertake market research, we broker finance for SME companies, and we provide extension services to farmers. In addition, we implement development projects in the area of horticulture, seeds and soil fertility management. For our office in Ethiopia we are currently recruiting an expatriate Deputy General Manager and Business Consultant. Resilience’s Ethiopia Office has 12 fulltime staff and implements projects on the interface of agriculture and business.

Job Purpose and Key Responsibilities

The vacancy comprises a dual position of Deputy General Manager / Business Consultant. As Deputy General Manager you will be overseeing the financial management of the company and provide support to the day-to-day management of the company, including financial management, human resource management and acquisition. This part of the position will take up about 25% of your time.

The other 75% of your time will be allocated to the following activities:

  • Supporting agricultural input companies in the development of business plans, financial models and production plans. In particular, this concerns the support to 15 Ethiopian seed companies and 10 Ethiopian soil input companies.
  • You will implement these activities together with a team of a local Ethiopian consultants that include an agronomist, agribusiness consultant and financial management coach. You will be in the lead for managing this team and ensuring project activities are implemented and KPIs are achieved.
  • In addition to the management of two business support activities of two large development projects, you will be involved in short-term studies and consultancy advice. This includes short-term assignment for individual companies (e.g. for raising finance or providing business advice) and market research studies or business opportunities.
  • In addition, you will be involved in group trainings of companies, e.g. on topics like business management and action planning.

Personal Qualifications

The Deputy General Manager/Business Consultant is a pro-active self-motivated professional, with a background in business management, agricultural economics and/or project management. He/she must be able to lead a team of local consultants, undertake acquisition for the company and oversee the finances and human resource management of the company. The Deputy General Manager/ Business Consultant has a positive, hands-on and flexible attitude.

Specific background of the Employee:

  • Minimum of five years’ experience working in business and economic development;
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in project management;
  • Master’s degree in one of the following fields: international business, business administration, project management and/or a related field;
  • Excellent analytical, presentation and writing skills for developing proposals, reports and business plans;
  • Preferably the candidate has advanced Excel skills and can work with large datasets;
  • Preferably the candidate has experience working in the agriculture sector and/or working in Ethiopia.

Position and Duty Location

  • The Deputy General Manager reports to the General Manager of Resilience Ethiopia.
  • The position of Deputy General Manager is a senior expat position according to the standardized salary scale of Resilience Ethiopia.
  • The Deputy General Manager will be based in Addis Ababa but should be willing to travel within the country frequently.
