B Lab turns 20: twenty years of proving business and impact can go hand in hand
In 2006, three friends in a small office in Philadelphia had one big question: what if companies measured not only profit, but also their impact on people and the planet? Twenty years later, B Lab has grown into a global movement for responsible business, and the number of certified B Corps in the Netherlands continues to grow rapidly.
What is a B Corp? The meaning of B Corp certification
A B Corp, short for Benefit Corporation, is a company independently certified by B Lab based on rigorous standards for social and environmental impact, transparency, and governance. The certification does not assess a single product or marketing claim, but the entire business operation: how a company treats employees, the impact it has on the community, how sustainable its supply chain is, and how transparent the organization is.
To become B Corp certified, companies complete the extensive B Impact Assessment. Businesses scoring fewer than 80 out of 200 possible points do not qualify. The median score of regular businesses completing the assessment is 50.9, showing just how high the bar is. In addition, B Lab reassesses certified companies every three years to ensure they continue to meet the standard. Certification is therefore not a one-time stamp of approval, but an ongoing commitment.
B Lab turns 20: from startup to global standard for sustainable business
Founded in 2006 with a handful of pioneers, the B Corp community now includes more than 9,000 certified companies across more than 90 countries and 150 industries. From small social enterprises to international brands like Patagonia and Ben & Jerry’s, the B Corp movement proves that impact and commercial success are not opposites.
Over the past two decades, B Lab has continuously raised the bar and refined its methodology. What may once have been considered proof of responsible business is no longer enough today. That only makes B Corp certification more credible — and the companies carrying it even more compelling.
